How to reformat CSV data into Unicode UTF-8 (CSV Troubleshooting - Excel)

When encountering difficulty with Excel files, such as loading unformatted data or displaying unusual and unexpected characters, you may need to ensure the CSV file is saved/opened correctly. 

To do this, you can follow the below guidance from a new Excel file, in order to import data from the affected CSV and to ensure this is saved in the correct format to be visible and useable. 

  1. Open Excel
  2. Find the Data Tab
  3. Find 'from text/csv' and press this button
  4. Here you get a preview window for the csv you are trying to reformat, and can set the formatting to display correctly. The below should work in almost all cases -
  5. Then load the data, and remove any blank pages
  6. Then click File > Export > Save as another file type
  7. Then make sure 'Save as Type' is set to CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)
